Irrigated cropland expansion exacerbates the urban moist heat stress in northern India

چکیده

Abstract Agricultural irrigation has significantly reshaped the land surface energy and water balance. Previous studies have well investigated its cooling effect on air temperature ( T ). However, increasing humidity which can intensify humid heat was often overlooked, particularly over urban areas with high population density, , consequently greater exposure to moist stress. In this study, using state-of-the-art reanalysis data at a spatial resolution (∼9 km), we evaluated how changes in area equipped for (AEI) around city affect stress (UMHS) more than 1000 cities China India. addition wet-bulb WB ) globe WBG ), consider are closer perceived temperature, were assessed. We found that although AEI expansion lowers increases due increased humidity, thereby exacerbating UMHS. This ‘warming’ of is evident northern India where expanded recent decades, prominent pre-monsoon post-monsoon seasons, when precipitation low. not lower intensity differing climatic conditions. Overall, study highlights side-effect regional climate, providing crucial information better understanding future planning.

Vulnerability to heat waves: Impact of urban expansion scenarios on urban heat island and heat stress in Paris (France)

Heat-wave risk in cities is determined both by regional climate evolutions and by cities size and shape change, because they can impact heat island effect. Land planning and urban transport policies, due to their long-lasting impact on cities shape, can therefore play a role in heat-wave risk mitigation. However, the link between these policies and resulting change in urban heat island is far f...

Biofuels, cropland expansion, and the extensive margin

Background: Recently, several papers have assessed land use consequences of biofuel expansion. In the absence of empirical evidence, these papers assigned subjective values to extensive margin (productivity of new croplands over productivity of existing croplands). Methods: This paper fills the gap in this area and provides a new data set which estimates land productivity at 0.5° × 0.5° (longit...

Nebraska's groundwater legacy: Nitrate contamination beneath irrigated cropland

A 31 year record of ∼44,000 nitrate analyses in ∼11,500 irrigation wells was utilized to depict the decadal expansion of groundwater nitrate contamination (N ≥ 10 mg/L) in the irrigated corn-growing areas of eastern and central Nebraska and analyze long-term nitrate concentration trends in 17 management areas (MAs) subject to N fertilizer and budgeting requirements. The 1.3 M contaminated hecta...

The Impact of Dry Versus Moist Heat

P eripheral IV catheter insertion is a common nursing procedure often required for the administration of chemotherapy, antibiotics, blood products, fluids, and other medical therapies in hematologic patients with cancer. Although necessary and usually brief, IV insertion often is a source of patient anxiety and discomfort and can be extremely difficult to achieve, particularly in individuals re...

Cumulus cell expansion and ultrastructural changes in in vitro matured bovine oocytes under heat stress

Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from cows were matured under normal (38.5°C) and elevated temperatures (41°C) simulating heat stress and their maturation was assessed based on measurement of cumulus expansion in both groups. There was a significant reduction (P
